Francisco Moncion’s bold oil painting “St. Michael and the Dragon” celebrates the famous biblical and artistic symbol from the Book of Revelation that represents the archangel Michael defeating Satan grounded in a Mid 20-Century modern style with organic design and strong theater esthetics. Francisco Moncion (1918 – 1995) was a charter member of the New York City Ballet. Over the course of his forty year dance career, choreographers George Balanchine, and Jerome Robbins created 22 major roles for Moncion including the Dark Angel in "Orpheus", Death in "La Valse", Prince Ivan in "Firebird", and the Boy in "Afternoon of a Faun". He was also a successful choreographer and frequently a subject photographed by George Platt Lynes, Carl van Vechten, Lon of NY and others. 

Moncion was a professional artist through out his celebrated dance career working primarily in oil, collage and pastel. As a dancer and artist he worked with artist including Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, and Corrado Cagli. His paintings and works on paper were exhibited throughout his career in New York City and Woodstock, NY. 

Moncion painted in his NYC apartment on Central Park West and at his 18th Century stone house in an area known as the Vly near Woodstock, New York from 1950 until his death in 1995.
