New York School, Floral Oil on Linen, by 20th Century artist Vann Ribblett (1930-2005) of a miniature Japanese Geisha doll with vase and giant Asian chrysanthemums.

Ribblett was born in Akron Ohio. He studied at the Art Student League of New York and to support himself as an artist, he worked for fifteen years as maître d’ at NY East Side legendary bar and restaurant Maxwell’s Plum owned by Warner LeRoy.  He served as recreation coordinator at Bailey House, a residence in Greenwich Village for homeless people living with AIDS, where he organized outings and offered personal support to residents. His home and studio in NYC were based on 19th Street near Gramercy Park. 


Ribblett was a large and imposing artist standing 6'6". He worked on large scale paintings often transforming miniature scenes to maxi scale as in this painting of a tiny Geisha doll . His largest work - a 12 panel series of 8 foot tall canvases depicting life-sized characters on the NY Subway in the 1970s is in a private collection.

 

Ribblett exhibited his works of exotic flowers and nudes in NYC throughout the 1970s and 1980s, most notably at the Clay Gallery on Madison Avenue.
