Exquisite Victorian Antique British Silver dressing table mirror in a heart shape design embossed with detailed birds and mythical faces, scrolls, flowers, foliage and lattice on a rich dark blue velvet.

It is embossed with W.C for William Comyns, the standard Lion for British sterling silver (92.5% silver), the Leopard Head assay mark is London, and the letter U which dates the piece to 1895.

William Comyns is one of the most celebrated London silversmiths of the late 19th century. With typically fine late 19th and early 20th century pieces, Comyns pieces often include tortoiseshell, as well as beautiful Victorian and Art Nouveau styles.

Establishing his company in 1858, Comyns registered his first mark in 1859. Their delicate and detailed silverware was highly popular, and retailed through some of the finest stores including Tiffany & Co. and The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company. In 1885, Comyn’s two sons Charles Harling Comyns and Richard Harling Comyns joined the business and it was renamed William Comyns & Sons.

William Comyns died in 1916, leaving the company to his sons who faced tough times during World War One and Two. In 1953, the firm was bought by Bernard Copping, and was eventually liquidated in 1987.
